Recently having just dropped the kids off at school, I had to go over to Rosebery to do some chores. Not quite ready
to begin heading back home to face those other kinds of chores of the household variety I made a great discovery -
Johnny's Café in Dalmeny Avenue.
It's the perfect place to restore some calm and revitalise yourself. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. The
staff are very friendly and happy to please. While enjoying a great coffee and a delicious baked cheesecake I noticed
that this café seemed very child friendly. There were a couple of Mums with toddlers and babies there, all
of whom were relaxed and appeared to be very welcome. There was plenty of room for the prams, and some tables and
chairs had been rearranged to accommodate them as a group.

A couple of weeks later, during the school holidays, I returned to Johnny's to meet two girlfriends from the
Eastern Suburbs and their children for morning tea / brunch. Parking was really easy for all of us, which is
pretty unusual these days but so welcome.
The menu was informative and sounded interesting and when everything arrived we were not disappointed. The
coffee is really great, and tea-drinking Lisa discovered lots to choose from and all were the real thing - no
tea bags. Jenny decided on the vitamin special (freshly squeezed lemon, orange and apple juice with ginger)
from the range of fresh juices and smoothies on offer.

We ordered some fruit muffins, a heavenly walnut pastry and Jenny, not having had much breakfast asked for the Hungarian
scrambled eggs which looked great, and Jenny said tasted even better.
|
The younger kids shared a grilled cheese on Turkish bread fingers which we asked to be divided into child sized
portions - no problem - they loved it. The older ones shared a bowl of pasta and a pumpkin soup with toast.
Lots of extra plates, cutlery, napkins, glasses of water and extra grated cheese were ordered. Nothing was too
much trouble for Johnny and the staff. Lisa even asked for a large apple juice to be split into three smaller
unbreakable glasses. The drinks were brought out complete with lots of ice, a colourful straw and a smile.
Everything was well prepared and nicely presented. Real food at affordable prices.
There's quite an extensive menu at Johnny's and apparently it gets quite busy with the lunchtime crowd (between
noon and about two I'm told) so I'd suggest going before or after.

Johnny's is light, clean and tastefully decorated with collectables and music memorablia (thankfully all well out
of reach) and has a homey feel, which is a nice change from so many cafés these days. And they play great music
too.
I'd recommend Johnny's Café. Meet some friends, bring the kids, or escape on your own. Enjoy the relaxing
atmosphere and leave feeling nurtured. I did.
